Alejandro Garri   (Countertenor -Male Alto)

The Chilean male alto, Alejandro Garri, enjoys a successful career as a soloist in concert and opera.  After vocal studies with María Eugenia Andreo in Chillán, Chile, Dr. Garri completed his vocal education under Andrej Kucharsky in Munich.  In recent years, he has studied privately with Marilyn Horne, who has hired him to lecture on Handelian opera for the Music Academy of the West, which she directs.  Winner of the International Competition of Singing in Iizuka, Japan, he also won multiple times both the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in the United States, and the Grand Prize for Singing from the National Theater in Santiago, Chile.

A recognized Baroque soloist, Dr. Garri has appeared in major Baroque works, among them, Handel's "Rodrigo" (Handelfestspiele, Halle, under Andreas Spering / Marcus Creed), Handel's "Rodelinda" (Virginia Opera, under Peter Mark) and in Alessandro Scarlatti's "Dixit Dominus" (Carnegie Hall, under Sir John Rutter).  For years, critics have been as amazed by his dark, dramatic tone color as the public has been by his ease and conviction on the stage.  Though he appeared in numerous Baroque festivals in the United States, he sings much more than just Early Music.  For example, he made his Los Angeles Music Center debut under Paul Salamunovich in Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" (Los Angeles Times: "Mr. Garri navigated the high-lying swan solo with ease and beauty.").  Dr. Garri is equally at home in song repertory by Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss, as well as Japanese arts songs and contemporary American compositions, having sung world premieres of works by Robert Linn and Kent Carlson.

Since moving to Frankfurt, Germany, Dr. Garri has formed a period-instrument ensemble for Early Music called "Complesso Armonico", which has the mission primarily to give the modern premieres of vocal music from the Renaissance, Baroque and Early Classical periods.  The Complesso is already engaged for a series of festivals and concerts throughout Germany.

The scores used by Complesso Armonico are provided by Dr. Garri's own publishing house, Garri Editions.  The original impetus of Garri Editions was to bring to light the repertory written in the Baroque for the alto voice.  Among the almost 200 works published are the only available modern critical editions of Handel's opera "Rodelinda" and Attilio Ariosti's opera "Il Coriolano".  Garri Editions' clientele includes Marilyn Horne, Jennifer Larmore, David Daniels, The British Library, and the libraries of UCLA, the Juilliard School of Music, and music libraries from Canada to Australia.

Dr. Garri most recently sang the role of Hamor in Handel's "Jephtha" with the Camerata Vocale Freiburg and the Kammerorchester Basel barock under Winfried Toll.  Earlier this year he was engaged for a recital tour in the United States, lecturing at several universities on the legacy of the castrati, on vocal technique and on Baroque cantatas.
